BMW M2 generations

The BMW M2 is the brainchild of BMW's M Division, a subsidiary branch responsible for BMW's range of specially enhanced high-performance sports cars. The M2 debuted in 2014 with a non-M-line BMW Motorsport engine, which was rather uninspiring and met lukewarm reception. It took the German carmaker 4 years to finally introduce the S55 engine, a high-performance variation of BMW's turbocharged straight-six N5. The revamp also brought along other great features, including a refined suspension system, making it the ultimate successor to the BMW M3 E30 and BMW 1 Series M Coupe. Under the hood of the M2 is a powerful engine that accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 4.4 seconds. It has an electronically limited max speed of 155 mph, but the M Driver's Package lets you increase the top speed to 170 mph.

What can you expect to find in a BMW M2?

Since all BMW M2 trims are 2-door coupes with the same turbocharged engine, choosing an M2 trim version couldn't be easier. Besides a few minor updates introduced over the years, there are no significant differences between spec levels. The first-generation M2 is simply known as the "M2". The BMW M2 Competition joined the line-up in 2018, and shortly after, the M2 CS also entered the market. All M2 trims across the range come with:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • DAB digital radio
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Leather trim
  • Metallic paint
  • Satellite navigation
  • Xenon lights

In 2018, BMW introduced the M2 Competition. The newest member of the family comes with a sleeker look, a more potent S55 engine and other extra features, such as:

  • LED adaptive headlights
  • High-Beam Assistant
  • Illuminated M2 headrests
  • Rear parking sensors

The end-of-the-line trim is the BMW M2 CS. This range-topping trim version elevated the M2 above all its predecessors, making it one of the most outstanding high-performance machines produced by the BMW M Division. It comes with forged wheels, a bespoke carbon bonnet and carbon fibre styling. It packs the same 444 bhp engine as its bigger counterpart, the BMW M4, plus other cool features, such as a sporty M Performance Bluetooth-controlled exhaust system, an M tricolour-stitched steering wheel and high-back sports seats.

Used BMW M2 information

Used BMW M2 FAQ's

Is the BMW M2 the same as the BMW 2 Series?

Even though the M2 and 2 Series look similar and share several of the same mechanical features, the M2 is not part of the 2 Series range. As it's the more hardcore version of the 2 Series, the M2 has a much more aggressive body kit. The M2 is the brainchild of the BMW M Division, similar to what the AMG is to Mercedes and the RS to Audi; these 3 elite badges are worn only by their most specialised performance cars.

How is the interior styling of the BMW M2?

The BMW M2 has an interior design that borrows heavily from the 2-Series. It is functional and well laid out, but some would say it lacks a bit of the sportiness that this car deserves. However, you still get racing car-inspired bucket seats, faux-carbon fibre add-ons and an intuitive infotainment system with a built-in sat-nav.

How does the BMW M2 drive?

With its higher than usual driving position, the M2 provides good visibility for drivers. Unlike the M4, it doesn't feel intimidating to drive. It drives like a 2-Series around the town, but it proves its performance prowess by offering an exciting drive when you take it out on quiet country roads. Its perfect combination of large wheels, refined suspension and direct steering help to ensure you'll forget all about the fancy adaptive dampers available in some of its rivals.

Which BMW M2 trim is best on the racetrack?

When considering an M2 for the racetrack, opt for the Competition or CS trim. Both M2 trims have faster engines, plus bigger and more powerful brakes. As they are upgraded versions of the standard M2, they grip the tarmac better, making it easier to take bends at higher speeds.

How do the different driving modes work on the BMW M2?

The M2 lets you choose between 3 distinct driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. The last 2 are for faster driving, providing sharper throttling response and heavier steering when needed. The Sport+ mode turns on the M Dynamic Traction Control system, which tweaks the electronic stability system and makes it easier to maintain high speeds around sharp bends. If you want to show off your M2's flashiness, try out the 'Smokey Burnout' feature. It overrides the rear-wheel braking system and allows the rear wheels to spin up at higher revs for longer than usual.

What is the safety rating for the BMW M2?

Like most sports cars, the Euro NCAP has never crash-tested the BMW M2. However, the BMW 2-Series was produced the same year as the M2, and it earned all 5 safety stars in NCAP crash-test safety ratings. The M2 has several safety features, including 8 airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, lane-departure monitoring and collision-warning systems.
