Engines and transmissions

Previous petrol and diesel variants have all been removed from the lineup. Toyota now equips the Yaris with a sole hybrid powertrain for maximum efficiency and the lowest possible emissions.

Petrol
  • 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine pairs with an electric motor to create 116bhp.
  • CVT drives the front wheels.
  • Averaging 68.8 mpg, this generation is the most efficient overall.
  • Dedicated EV mode is ideal for urban travel.

Practicality

There's nothing fancy about the Yaris, but it will get around town without a problem. It's designed to fit in small spaces, but this cuts down on how much room is inside the cabin.

Interior space
  • Rear seats made for children or smaller adults.
  • Adjustable driver's seat allows people of all sizes to fit comfortably.
  • Handy storage compartments throughout hold items with ease.
Boot space
  • 286-litre boot space is the smallest of all hatchbacks.
  • Height-adjustable floor makes it easier to load the boot full.
  • Shopping bag hooks in the boot keep items from sliding around.
Bodystyles
  • Three-door hatchback offers a sporty design.
  • Five-door hatchback gives a more spacious feel.

Safety

  • Newest generation was evaluated five stars by Euro NCAP.
  • 2017 evaluation of previous generation also given a perfect five-star rating.
  • Standard equipment includes pre-collision system and lane assist.

Technology

  • 7- and 8-inch touchscreen displays available, depending on the trim.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide standard connectivity.
  • High-tech equipment, such as fully digital gauges, aren't available.

Toyota Yaris generations

Since its introduction in 1999, the Toyota Yaris has been through four generations. Each new generation brings upgraded technology and a refreshed style, along with varying powertrain options. As one of the country's most reliable vehicles for minimal cost, there's a Yaris on nearly every road, further proving its popularity.

Fourth Generation (2020 to Present)

Available as a three- and five-door hatchback, this Yaris only comes with a hybrid powertrain (with the exception of the rally-bred GR variant). It was honoured as the 2021 European Car of the Year, and the GR Yaris is known to be one of the best hot hatches on the road, with superior style and exhilarating performance.

Because of the smaller footprint, the Yaris is easy to drive on city streets. It's also highly efficient, helping to save money at the petrol pump. The only aspect lacking in the newer models is space, which is to be expected because of its small size.

Third Generation (2014 to 2020)

The hybrid Yaris was first made available during this generation, along with the petrol and diesel options. At the time of its release, it was the cheapest hybrid model in the UK, giving budget-conscious buyers the option to save more. . Styling was refreshed and technology added in significant design changes in both 2014 and 2017.

The biggest complaints from this generation relate to the excessive engine noise and uninspired performance created by the CVT gearbox. Most consumers overlooked these minor issues to have a low-cost car, allowing the Yaris to continue being one of the most popular cars in the UK.

Second Generation (2006 to 2014)

An update to the rear seat design created more practicality. Unlike many other small cars of this time, the rear seats fold flat, creating more cargo room. These seats also slide forward and backwards, allowing you to choose between more boot space or more leg room for rear passengers.

During this generation, Toyota also replaced the T-Sport with the 1.8 SR. This newer model looks sporty and has a great style, but it doesn't have the same level of performance.

Used Toyota Yaris FAQ's

Are Toyota Yaris cars any good?

The newer hybrid Yaris is made even better than before, with improved fuel economy and lower operating costs. Toyota is known for building reliable vehicles, and the Yaris is no exception, even with the budget pricing.

Is the Yaris or Corolla better?

The Yaris is an optimal car for urban travel, with the ability to get around town easily thanks to its smaller size. It's also cheaper to buy. For more space, the Toyota Corolla may be a better option. The Corolla also has more technology and a more comfortable ride. Neither is considered better than the other though, with the decision coming down to the driver's needs.

How long will a Toyota Yaris last?

Just because the Yaris has a lower price doesn't mean that it is going to fail prematurely. On the contrary, Toyota has built the Yaris to last, especially when properly maintained. By following manufacturer maintenance schedules, it's possible to get a Yaris to last more than 200,000 miles.

What is the best Yaris model to buy?

Anything from the fourth generation (2020-present) is going to be the best option. These models have a hybrid powertrain and the newest technology for an updated ride. However, there aren't any Yaris models that need to be avoided, and buying a used Yaris is an option for those with a smaller budget.

What to look for when buying a used Toyota Yaris?

It's vital to look at the condition of the Yaris, ensuring that it was well cared for. You want a used Yaris that has received regular oil changes and maintenance. Look over the body to ensure that there's no rust or other imperfections that would lower the resale value.
